Joos Vandewalle - the sculptor#

Joos Vandewalle is an active full time professor at the Electrical Engineering Department of the K.Universiteit Leuven and loves the research on applied mathematics and engineering systems as well as the teaching of these topics to classes up to 550.

In the last 7 summer periods he has spent about one week each year on his hobby of sculpturing in soft stone like soap stone, alabaster, and serpentine. Each of these periods has resulted in sculptures that are 30-40 cm high and have some real three-dimensional vision and nonfigurative shapes. It is typically the aim to obtain attractive views from all sides, and to respect the inherent expression of the stones as well in colors as in forms. These forms tend to be quite smooth, and close to forms encountered in nature and have shapes and surfaces that have interesting mathematical meaning like convex and concave and hyperboloids, cups. These link up with the mathematical aspects of the research.

Although he loves the sculpturing, until now this has been a pleasant hobby with not much external visibility. Most of this sculpturing has been done in yearly campaigns at the Talander rural center http://www.talander.be in Arendonk in the north of Belgium with artistic coaching by a visionary and creative German artist Gerhard Helmers http://www.galeriehelmers.com/helmers.php?ausstellungen.
