*1987-1988 Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship, USA (held at the University of Southern California and the University of California at Santa Barbara)
*1999 Chiang Ching-Kuo Senior Scholar Award (a one-year fellowship)
*2008 ERC Advanced Grant for period 2009-2013 "The hybrid syntactic typology of Sinitic languages"
*2015-2017 Appointment as a ‘High-level foreign specialist’  (高端外国专家)  to Shanghai Jiao Tong University (awarded by the Ministry of National Education in China) - one-month lecture visits to China each year.
