Paolo Colombo's research has mainly focused on the manufacturing of ceramics into complex components with architected morphology for a variety of engineering applications. In particular, most of his activity has been devoted to the fabrication of porous ceramics from precursors, such as preceramic polymers or geopolymers. Part of his research has also been directed toward the upcycling of natural and industrial waste, especially through the use of advanced manufacturing technologies.\\

He has published 14 review papers, one of which (1) was the #1 cited paper in the past 10 years in the Materials Science, Ceramics category. He has published a total of 372 papers (Scopus), with a total of 22124 citations to date, in a range of high impact, Q1 journals (https://scholar.google.it/citations?user=cqDoNRgAAAAJ&hl=en&oi=ao), such as Science, Nature Materials, Advanced Materials, Small, Advanced Functional Materials, Advanced Science, Progress in Materials Science, besides the main journals belonging to the Ceramics sub-category of Materials Science.
