European policy recommendations on AI in Science#
On 15th April, the European Scientific Advice Mechanism launched its latest evidence review and policy recommendations on ‘Successful and timely uptake of AI in science in the EU’.
Cardiff University, through its role as host of the Academia Europaea Knowledge Hub, is a member of the consortium of European academies that undertook the evidence review.
As well as coordinating evidence reviews, the Academia Europaea Cardiff Knowledge Hub cooperates closely with Cardiff’s Library Services on performing systematic literature reviews for the European Scientific Advice Mechanism. For the AI topic, together they delivered rapid reviews in all four key areas of work (Vision, Process, People and Policy). AE Cardiff is also taking a leading role in the outreach programme for the reports, including hosting an international webinar on AI and academic publishing on 13th May, which is free and open to all.
The policy recommendations were handed over to European Commissioners Iliana Ivanova and Executive Vice President of the European Commission for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age, Margrethe Vestager, in Brussels. The Group of Chief Scientific Advisors recommends forming a new European institute for AI in science that would provide massive high-performing computational power, a sustainable cloud infrastructure, and AI training programmes for scientists. Alongside these services, a European AI in Science Council would provide dedicated funding for researchers in all disciplines to explore and adopt AI in their sciences.

More about the Scientific Advice Mechanism #
The Scientific Advice Mechanism provides independent scientific evidence and policy recommendations to the European institutions by request of the College of Commissioners. It includes the Science Advice for Policy by European Academies (SAPEA) consortium, which gathers expertise from more than 100 academies across Europe, and the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GSCA), who provide independent guidance informed by the evidence.
