Professor Miguel A.F. Sanjuán, a member of Academia Europaea (MAE) and a Physics Professor at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos
(URJC) in Madrid, Spain, has been elected as a new Full Academician of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical, and Natural Sciences of Spain in the section of Physics and Chemistry, occupying the newly created medal number 60.
The Academy consists of numerary academicians (up to 72), corresponding academicians (up to 144), supernumeraries, and foreign members, grouped into three sections: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and Natural Sciences. The appointment was approved during the plenary session held on October 25, 2023, at the Royal Academy of Sciences. The Royal Academy of Exact, Physical, and Natural Sciences of Spain is a public institution dedicated to the study and research of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Geology, and their applications, as well as their promotion for the benefit of society, integrated into the Institute of Spain. It was founded on February 25, 1847, during the reign of Queen Isabel II, a name it retains to this day. The Royal Academy of Sciences has had illustrious scientists among its members, such as José Echegaray, Leonardo Torres Quevedo, Blas Cabrera, Santiago Ramón y Cajal, or Gregorio Marañón, as well as foreign members like Carl Friedrich Gauss, Erwin Schrödinger, Marie Curie, or Michael Atiyah.
About Professor Miguel A.F. Sanjuán#
Professor Miguel A.F. Sanjuán leads the research group in Nonlinear Dynamics, Chaos Theory, and Complex Systems at the URJC, having contributed to pioneering work in various areas of this specialty and promoting the development of this research area in multiple facets. Throughout his professional career, he has served as Principal Investigator in more than 20 competitively funded research projects and has supervised over 20 doctoral theses. He holds the title of Honorary Professor at several universities in China and has been a Visiting Researcher at various European, American, and Asian universities. He is also a Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science at the University of Tokyo and a Fulbright Scholar at the Institute for Physical Science and Technology at the University of Maryland. In 2020, he was the first recipient of the Chieh-Su Hsu Award for distinguished researchers in Nonlinear Dynamics and Control. In 2022, he was also the first recipient of the James Yorke Award for his significant contributions to Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos.
He serves as a scientific evaluator for numerous international research agencies and holds the position of Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Applied Nonlinear Dynamics and Editor of the Book Series on Complexity, Nonlinearity, and Chaos at the prestigious World Scientific publishing house.
Currently, he is the Editor-in-Chief of the Spanish Physics Royal Society, a member of the EPJ Scientific Advisory Committee of the European Physical Society, a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the GADEA for Science Foundation (CCA-FGC) in the area of Physical Sciences and Universe. Additionally, he is a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of Lithuania.
