Honorary doctorate of the National University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México – UNAM) for Prof. Dingwell#
Prof. Donald B. Dingwell (AE Vice-President), Chair of Mineralogy and Petrology and Director of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich, has received an honorary doctorate from Mexico´s top University: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México – UNAM at its Fall convocation in September. Professor Dingwell receives the honour for his lifelong contributions to Mexican volcanology and to volcanology in general.
Prof. Dingwell (chair of Mineralogy and Petrology) is the first volcanologist to be so honoured in over 100 year-old tradition.
Mexico is a volcanic country and Mexico City stands in the shadow Popocatepetl whose most recent eruption occurred in March 2018. Volcanology has a very high reputation at UNAM and volcano monitoring is one of its institutional speciality. UNAM is possibly the only University in the world with a volcano on its crest. UNAM itself is Mexico´s most prestigious University, serving as the “School of the Nation”.
