Press release
The University of Pittsburgh announces the award to Jürgen Mittelstrass of its 2012-2013 Nicholas Rescher Prize for for contributions to systematic philosophy
Born in Düsseldorf (Germany) in 1936, Jürgen Mittelstrass has been Professor of Philosophy and Philosophy of Science at the University of Constance since 1990, as well as Director of its Center for Philosophy of Science. The recipient of numerous honorary doctorates, he has served during 1985-1990 as member of the German Science Council, during 1992-1997 as member of the Senate of the German Research Society, and during 1995-1998 as member of the German Chancellor’s Council for Research, Technology, and Innovation. Since 2005 he has been President of the Austrian Science Council. The author of numerous books and monographs, Mittelstrass has worked for decades to mediate between C. P. Snow’s two cultures, striving to render both philosophers and scientists aware of the relevance and usefulness of the work of the other culture. More than any other contemporary investigator he has brought home to European scientists the utility of philosophical contextualization for their own work.
Jürgen Mittelstraß will receive his award on May 3, 2013. He will give a public lecture on "Justice in an Ageing Society."
The Academy congratulates Prof. Mittelstrass!
