Philippe Canguilhem - Biography#
Philippe Canguilhem is Professor of Musicology at the University of Tours/Centre d’Etudes Supérieures de la Renaissance and a senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France (2017 – 2022). In the past, he was Professor of Musicology at the University of Toulouse and a fellow at Villa I Tatti (2005 - 2006) and at the Italian Academy of Columbia University (2013). He obtained his Habilitation à Diriger les Recherches en 2003 and the Doctorat en musicologie en 1994. He has held teaching appointments at the the Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya (Barcelona), the Conservatoire National de Région de Toulouse and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. His work focuses on Italian music in the sixteenth century, with a special emphasis on Florentine musical life, and on the history and practice of improvised counterpoint. He has also pursued a professional performer’s career with internationally renowned early music ensembles (Les Sacqueboutiers, Le Concert Spirituel, Les Passions).
