Friedrich Ehrendorfer is the author of 330 scientific papers, several monographs and textbooks in the field of systema tics and taxonomy of a number of vascular plant groups (e.g. Achillea, Dipsacaceae, Rubiaceae), plant phylogeny and evolution, polyploidy and its evolutionary significance.

Served as Managing Editor of the Plant Systematics and Evolution journal for 25 years (1974–1999) and since 1999 as Coeditor of the Biosystematics and Ecology Series of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
