Born in the Black Forest (Germany) in 1956, Ottmar Ette has beenChair of Romance Literature at the University of Potsdam (venia legendi: Romance Literatures and Comparative Literature), Brandenburg since 1995. He studied in Freiburg (Germany) and Madrid (Spain), wrote his dissertation on José Martí in 1990 at the University of Freiburg and his Habilitation on Roland Barthes in 1995 at the Catholic University of Eichstätt, Bavaria.
He received the «Heinz-Maier-Leibnitz» Award in 1987 from the German Ministry of Culture and the German Research Association for his new edition of Alexander von Humboldt's Reise in die Äquinoktial-Gegenden des Neuen Kontinents (Personal Narrative, 2 vols., Frankfurt/Main - Leipzig: Insel Verlag 1991). In 1991, he received the «Young Scholars Award for Romance Literature» from the University of Freiburg, Germany, for his book on José Martí (German: Tübingen: Niemeyer 1991; Spanish: Mexico: UNAM 1995). In 2001, he received the «Hugo-Friedrich/Erich Köhler» Award from the University of Freiburg in cooperation with the universities of Basel, Mulhouse and Strasbourg for his book on Roland Barthes.
2004-2005 Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (Institute for Advanced Study). Co-founder of the DFG-Research Training Group "lebensformen + lebenswissen" (since 2006) as well as of the DFG-International Research Training Group "Zwischen Räumen" (since 2009) and DFG-Research Training Group "Sichtbarkeit und Sichtbarmachung" (Visibility and Visual Production) (since 2011). Ottmar Ette is also co-founder of the network ForLaBB (Forschungsverbund Lateinamerika Berlin-Brandenburg). April 2010-Juli 2010 Fellow at FRIAS (Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies). Since 2010, ordinary member of the Academia Europaea (Academy of Europe). Since 2012, Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques (France).
He is editor of the book series mimesis - Romance Literatures of the World. He is co-editor of the review Iberoamericana (Madrid - Frankfurt/Main) as well as founder and co-editor of the international electronic review HiN - Alexander von Humboldt in the Net (ISSN: 1617-5239) and editorial supervisor of avhumboldt.de - Humboldt Informationen online. Since 2009, he is also co-editor of the electronic review Istmo. Revista virtual de estudios literarios y culturales centroamericanos (ISSN: 1535-2315).

As assistant professor, Ottmar Ette taught at Eichstätt, Bavaria from 1987 to 1995, before coming to Potsdam. He was a visiting professor in various countries of Latin America and the USA. He has given numerous lectures in many different countries.
