José Gómez Segade - Biography#
José Antonio Gómez Segade was born 27 August 1943 in Medeiros (Monterrei), Ourense province, in the Autonomous Community of Galicia in north-western Spain. Received his graduate degree (1966) and his Ph.D. (1970) at the Law School of Santiago de Compostela University –USC-(Spain).Married, with a son and a daughter. Mother tongues: Galician and Spanish. Foreign languages: spoken and written English, German, French, Portuguese and Italian.
Research at the USC and at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property in Munich since 1971 with short and longer stages. Tenured Full Professor, Commercial Law Chair (Catedrático de Derecho Mercantil) in 1975, he taught in different Spanish and foreign universities, like the Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord NH, USA In 1981 he returned to Santiago de Compostela University Law School where he has continued his research and teaching activity until now.
Has extensively spoken at conferences, master courses and workshops in Spain and abroad, mainly in European countries like Portugal and in Latin America. Received distintions and awards like the Doctorate “honoris causa” by the University of Ica (Perú). Member of academic institutions in the EU and in Spanish and Portuguese institutions; as well as of the scientific board of Spanish and foreign reviews, like IIC, Rivista del Diritto di autore, orr Revista de Derecho Mercantil (RDM).
Director of a number of papers and doctoral thesis, and author of several books and some 150 articles, reviews and commentaries in Spanish and foreign periodicals and books in the field of commercial law, competition and Intellectual Property, mainly patent law.
Beyond the academic teaching and research, activities in other fields linked with Commercial Law, like arbitrator in the ICC in Paris in different cases since 1997
