Yaochu Jin - Biography#


Yaochu Jin received his Dr.-Ing. degree in 2001 from Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, and his BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, in 1988, 1991, and 1996, respectively.

He is presently an Alexander von Humboldt Professor for Artificial Intelligence endowed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Faculty of Technology, Bielefeld University, Germany. He is also a Surrey Distinguished Chair, Professor in Computational Intelligence, Department of Computer Science, University of Surrey, UK. During 1999-2010, he was a Principal Scientist and Head of the Evolution and Learning Fundamentals Research Group with the Honda Research Institute Europe, Germany.


Since he moved to academia, he played a leading or pioneering role in many research fields, notably in evolutionary optimization, evolutionary learning, and evolutionary development. He has authored 3 monographs, 10 edited volumes and conference proceedings, and over 400 papers, including 90 in very prestigious IEEE Transactions. According to Google Scholar, his publications have received over 28,000 citations in total and an h-index of 80. He was also granted 8 EU, US and Japanese patents.


Prof Jin has secured over GBP 3 million research grants from EC FP7, UK EPSRC, UK Royal Society, Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation, National Science Foundation of China, National Physical Laboratory, and companies including Honda, Airbus, Bosch, and Huawei Helsinki Research Center. He has supervised 5 postdoctoral associates, 20 PhD students as the principle supervisor, and co-supervised 9 PhD students. During his time at Honda, he led over 15 collaborative research projects (over EUR 2 million in total) with universities all over the world, and co-supervised 2 postdocs and 10 PhD students.

He has served as a referee for 10 professorial promotions of top universities from US, UK, Singapore, Australia, and Hong Kong.
