Benedikt Löwe - Biography#
Benedikt Löwe studied philosophy and mathematics in Hamburg, Tübingen, Berlin, and Berkeley, Calif. He obtained a Master's degree in Mathematics (Dipl.-Math.) from the University of Tübingen in 1996 and a doctorate in Mathematics (Dr.rer.nat.) from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in 2001, completed his Habilitation at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn in 2004, and received the degrees of M.A. and Sc.D. from the University of Cambridge. Löwe's research deals with the foundations of mathematics and philosophy of mathematics; he has been involved in multidisciplinary endeavours, linking mathematics to the humanities, the social sciences, and the information sciences. As part of these efforts, he has edited numerous books and special issues of journals, and served on the editorial board of several journals, among them the journal 'Mathematical Logic Quarterly' where he was Managing Editor from 2011 to 2022. Löwe is a member of the Académie Internationale de Philosophie des Sciences (AIPS).
Löwe is affiliated with the Universität Hamburg, the Universiteit van Amsterdam, and the University of Cambridge.
In Hamburg, he is the head of the research group 'Mathematische Logik und interdisziplinäre Anwendungen der Logik' (ML) and chairholder of the CIPSH Chair 'Diversity of Mathematical Research Cultures and Practices' (DMRCP).
In Amsterdam, he is affiliated with the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) where he served as Director of the Graduate Programme in Logic, as chair of the Examinations Board and Admissions Board, and as Vice Director for Research of the ILLC (2021-2022).
In Cambridge, he is or was Fellow of Corpus Christi College and Churchill College, Bye Fellow of Christ's College, Lucy Cavendish College, and St Edmund's College, Director of Studies at Churchill College, Lucy Cavendish College, and St Edmund's College, an Affiliated Lecturer at the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, and a member of the Faculties of Mathematics and Philosophy.
Löwe's role international science governance includes serving as Secretary General of the Division for Logic, Metholodogy and Philosophy of Science and Technology of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (DLMPST/IUHPST), as President of the Deutsche Vereinigung für Mathematische Logik und für Grundlagenforschung der exakten Wissenschaften (DVMLG), and in various other governance positions.
