His research focuses on comparative politics and international political economy. His book Commerce and Coalitions (1989) explores how international trade shapes domestic political coalitions.
His recent work has covered such topics as the economic effects of electoral systems, the economics of slavery, and how regional specialization in the European Union affected responses to the crisis of 2008-09.
From 2007 through 2012, Rogowski served as Lead Editor of the American Political Science Review.
He has been a visiting fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford and at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. During academic year 2019 - 2020, he was a Weatherhead Scholar at Harvard University.
