Petra Schwille - Curriculum Vitae#
Petra Schwille is Director at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried near Munich, Germany, and Honorary Professor at the LMU Munich. She studied physics and philosophy in Stuttgart and Göttingen, and graduated 1993 with Diploma in Physics at the Georg August University, Göttingen. She obtained her Ph.D. in 1996 from the TU Braunschweig, with a thesis on Fluorescence (Cross-)Correlation Spectroscopy, performed at the MPI for Biophysical Chemistry, Göttingen. After a postdoctoral stay at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, she returned to the MPI Göttingen as a research group leader, financed by the BMBF Biofuture grant, in 1999. In 2002, she accepted a Chair of Biophysics at the newly established BIOTEC center of the TU Dresden. In 2004, she received the Philip Morris Research Prize. In 2010, she received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and in 2011, Petra Schwille received the Braunschweig Research Prize. Since 2010, she is member in the German National Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina and since 2011 member in the National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). She received in 2013 the Suffrage Science Award from MRC-CSC in London. Since 2015, she is Honorary Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society and since 2017 a Biophysical Society Fellow.
Since 2012, she is heading the department Cellular and Molecular Biophysics at the MPI of Biochemistry. Her scientific interests range from single molecule biophysics to the synthetic biology of reconstituted systems. Also since 2012, she is Honorary Professor at LMU Munich (Physics Faculty). Since the same year, Petra Schwille is Scienctific Advisory Board Member at the MRC Clinical Science Center, London as well as at the FMP Berlin. Petra Schwille is in the Board of Trustees for the Heinrich Wieland Prize. Since 2013 she is a Scienctific Board Member of IST Austria as well as in the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanties (BBAW) and also in EMBO. Since 2017, she is in the Board of Trustees of the VCI (German chemical industry association) and since 2018, she is in the Board of Trustees of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt.
