Lothar Thiele#
Short laudatio by Reinhard Wilhelm#
Lothar Thiele has excelled in several research areas.
- He is one of the world-wide leaders in the area of multi-objective optimization where a system’s behaviour is not optimized along a single trajectory, but along several trajectories, often resulting in a set of Pareto-optimal design points. This area is of high relevance since often systems are optimized for speed, energy consumption and cost at the same time. He applies genetic algorithms and considers applications in biology and system design
- He has developed the Real-Time Calculus for the performance analysis of distributed systems. This calculus is based on the max-plus algebra. It represents the state-of-the art in distributed-system performance analysis.
- On the engineering side, Lothar Thiele has great achievements in the design of mobile information and communication systems, including wearable computing and sensor networks with applications in environmental monitoring.
- Lothar Thiele has served and still serves in many important functions. He is member of the board and past chair of the ACM Special Interest Group on embedded systems (SIGBED).
- Lothar Thiele is member of the editorial boards of several scientific journals, e.g. the Journal of Signal Processing Systems and the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation.
- Besides that, Lothar Thiele has passed the final concert exam in piano (with grande distinction) before the Jury Superieur de Belgique, Brussels, Belgium.
