Cheng Zhang - Biography#
Dr. Cheng Zhang received his M.D. and Ph.D. degree from Shandong University in China, a doctoral student training in Baylor College of Medicine, USA, and a postdoctoral training in University of Oklahoma, USA. He is currently Professor of Medicine and chief physician at Shandong University Qilu Hospital. He currently holds the position of Vice Dean of Cheeloo Medical College of Shandong University, Chairman of the Department of Cardiology of Qilu Hospital, Vice Director of National Key Laboratory for Innovation and Transformation of Luobing Theory and Vice Director of The Key Laboratory for Cardiovascular Remodeling and Function Research of Chinese Ministry of Education and Chinese National Health Commission.
His research interest involves atherosclerosis, heart failure and abdominal aortic aneurysm. As a principal investigator, he has led more than 20 research projects, and authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles in international journals such as Nat Med, Nat Rev Cardiol, Cell Host Microbe, Cell Metab, Sci Transl Med, J Am Coll Cardiol, Circ Res, which has been cited more than 6,000 times with an H-index 44. He has made outstanding contributions to basic and clinical research work in cardiovascular diseases, and won a number of prizes or honors awarded by Chinese government, American Heart Association (AHA), European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and Chinese Society of Cardiology (CSC). Under his leadership, Department of Cardiology of Qilu Hospital has taken a leading position in a number of fields of clinical cardiology in China, such as transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, intracardiac echocardiography, intravascular ultrasound imaging, artificial intelligence- assisted cardiac computerized tomography, coronary microvascular disease, cardiac amyloidosis, cardioncology, left ventricular assist device therapy, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, and integrated Western and traditional Chinese medicine. Dr. Zhang has organized a series of clinical trials and chaired the writing committee for a number of expert consensuses.
As a Standing Committee Member CSC, Dr. Zhang has actively engaged in international academic exchanges, and frequently invited to speak at Scientific Sessions of American Herat Association, Great Wall Internal Congress of Cardiology and Annual Congress of Chinese Society of Cardiology. He has served as a co-chairman of Qilu International Conference of Cardiovascular Disease since 2020, which has become the largest cardiovascular conference in China with an online audience of 3,960,000 in 2022. He has established strong collaborations with the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, King's College London in the United Kingdom, and Baylor College of Medicine, University of Oklahoma, and Thomas Jefferson University in the United States. He is one of the founders of Shandong University-Karolinska Institutet Collaborative Laboratory for Cardiovascular Research. He has successfully applied for international collaborative projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China with international experts and published a number of papers supported by these projects in international journals. As a Vice Dean of Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, he is responsible for international relations and has raised Sino-European collaborations to a new level. In the last 5 years, Shandong University has signed cooperation agreements with more than 10 universities in Europe. And four international cooperative laboratories for cardiovascular research, cancer research, stem cell research and global health research have been jointly established between Shandong University and Karolinska Institute, which have received strong support from the Chinese government.
