Holger Kreft - Biography#

Holger Kreft is a leading biogeographer and macroecologist and a Full Professor at the University of Göttingen, Germany. He is broadly interested in understanding how and why biodiversity including its multiple taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic dimensions vary in space and time – from the plot to the globe – and how humans are altering these patterns. In his research, he combines observational field studies, experiments and ecoinformatics. He maintains field research projects in Mexico, Panama, Madagascar, Indonesia and other tropical countries. Kreft and his team are leading in the analysis of global plant diversity and have assembled and contributed to high-profile global databases such as GIFT, GloNAF, EpiList, TRY, sPlots. Kreft is well-known internationally for ground-breaking contributions to the documentation and understanding of global plant diversity gradients, (functional) island biogeography, and how land-use change affects tropical biodiversity.
