Georg Langs - Biography#

Georg Langs is Full Professor for Machine Learning in Medical Imaging at Medical University of Vienna. Since 2011, he is the founding director of the Computational Imaging Research Lab (CIR) at the Department of Biomedical Imaging and Image-guided Therapy, with a 25 strong interdisciplinary team. CIR develops machine learning methodology for medical image analysis, the quantification of predictive markers in imaging data and connected patient information, and the identification of phenotypes in large-scale heterogeneous clinical routine data. Over the last two years CIR has won competitive grants for project funding exceeding €6Mio with G. Langs as PI.

Since 2023 he is the director of the Joint Initiative on AI in Medical Imaging of the European Institute of Biomedical Imaging Research (EIBIR), and is the scientific lead of the Respiratory Disease Phenotype Observatory, Zoonotic Disease Integrated Action (ZODIAC), UNO, IAEA. Since 2011, he is Research Associate at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab at MIT, where he held a Research Scientist position from 2009-2011. and Associate Faculty at the Complexity Science Hub Vienna. He was a post-doctoral researcher at the Applied Mathematics Laboratory at the Ecole Centrale de Paris (Paris, France, 2007-2008). He finished his PhD in Computer Science at the Graz University of Technology in 2007, and his Master of Science in Mathematics at the Vienna University of Technology (2003).

He is co-author of more than 200 peer-reviewed papers. Georg Langs is co-founder of a contextflow GmbH, a MedUni spin-off developing machine learning software for medical imaging data.
