- M.A in Irish Literature, University College Dublin (1978 ¬1979), First Class Honours.
- Ph.D. in Comparative Literature (1981 1984) at the University of Toronto, thesis “James Joyce and Friedrich Hölder¬lin in Contempo¬rary French Criticism.” Conferred in Toronto on 14 March 1985 and accepted as a Belgian Doctorate on 26 May 1986.
