Markus Nöthen - Biography#
Following his medical studies in Würzburg and professional posts in Bonn and Antwerp, Markus Nöthen has been a full professor at the University of Bonn since 2004 and has headed the Institute of Human Genetics at the University Hospital Bonn since 2008. The focus of Markus Nöthen’s research is the investigation of genetic mechanisms of common multifactorial diseases and disease-associated quantitative measures. In addition to formal genetic studies, he has extensive expertise in the use of large-scale molecular genetic studies to identify disease-associated genes at the molecular level. This work has led to the identification of a large number of disease-associated genes and an increasingly comprehensive characterisation of the complex genetic architecture of the diseases under investigation. Building on gene identification, Markus Nöthen's research group uses bioinformatic and functional methods to further characterise disease mechanisms. Markus Nöthen has contributed to more than 800 scientific publications, including a large number of milestone papers in the elucidation of the genetic basis of diseases. In the publication analysis for the field of "Human Genetics", which is carried out by the independent journal Laborjournal for scientists from the area of Germany/Austria/Switzerland approximately every 5 years, Markus Nöthen was listed in position 1 in the most recently published ranking (4/2018). Markus Nöthen has been responsible for a large number of scientific projects and has been supported by a wide range of third-party funding bodies (including the EU, DFG, BMBF, FWO) in the course of his scientific career. Based on his scientific achievements, he has been an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 2010.
