Klaus Pietschmann - Biography#
Klaus Pietschmann was born in Cologne in 1972. He studied Musicology and Medieval History at the universities of Cologne, Florence and Münster, completing his M.A. in 1996 at Münster in Early Modern History with the thesis "Kanonisationspolitik im ausgehenden Mittelalter: Die Heiligsprechung des Antoninus von Florenz, 1523".
From 1997-2000 he was a member of the Graduate Seminar "Die Renaissance in Italien und ihre europäische Rezeption" at the University of Bonn, a period distinguished by a year's scholarship at the Deutsches Historisches Institut in Rome. In 2000 he gained his Ph.D. in Musicology with the thesis "Kirchenmusik zwischen Tradition und Reform. Die päpstliche Kapelle und ihr Repertoire unter Papst Paul III., 1534-1549", revised and published in 2007, which was awarded the prize for theses in the humanities by the Göttinger Akademie der Wissenschaften.
After working 2001-2003 on the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) project "Die Oper in Italien und Deutschland 1770-1830" (Universities of Cologne and Bonn jointly) he was appointed Assistant Lecturer and Researcher (Wissenschaftlicher Assistent) at the University of Zürich, a post he held for three years, culminating in his Habilitation in 2006 with the thesis "Laboratorium des Wandels: Wien und die Diversifizierung der Oper um 1800".
From 2006-2009 he was Assistant Professor in Musicology at the University of Berne. This period included a visiting professorship at the Institut für Musikwissenschaft, Karl-Franzens-Universität, Graz, 2006-2007, and a visiting fellowship at the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, Villa I Tatti, Florence, 2008-2009.
In 2009 he was appointed Professor and Director of the Institut für Musikwissenschaft of the University Mainz. In 2018 he was awarded with a 5 years fellowship of the Gutenberg Research Council. Currently he is conducting two major research projects of the Mainz Academy of Sciences (Gesamtausgabe der Werke Christoph Willibald Glucks and Repertoire des Sources Musicales, Board of the Central Office).
