Short laudatio by Ulrich Teichler#

Jussi Valimaa has turned out to the most highly appreciated higher education researcher of the Nordic countries in recent years. His profound integration of disciplinary approaches of history, sociology and political science can be seen in his theoretical work on two major themes: Cultural dimensions of higher education and the role of higher education in the knowledge society.

Various other themes play a role in the list of hundreds of publications: Development of higher education in Finland and in other Nordic countries, internationalisation of higher education, higher education and the world of work.

Recently, after a highly selective decision-making process, the European Science Foundation entrusted to him the leadership of a European network of higher education researchers on Higher Education in the knowledge society. He also was the chair of a joint doctoral programme on higher education of various Finnish universities. He obviously is highly appreciated by Finnish or Nordic policy makers, academic associations or higher education umbrella organisations as an adviser of higher education policy matters whereby these activities obviously are nourished by his profound knowledge base in higher education research.
