Call for nomination of experts from a range of disciplines and fields to review evidence on Advanced Materials, for the European Scientific Advice Mechanism#
As part of the SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) consortium, we are pleased to issue a call for nominations for experts to take part in the SAPEA evidence gathering activities on Advanced Materials, within the context of European industrial competitiveness, the circular economy and innovation. We are looking for expertise across a range of disciplines and fields, from STEM and also the social sciences. Sector-based studies will span five areas: energy, electronics, health, mobility and construction.
The scientific advice will contribute to the definition of an EU position in discussions on Advanced Materials. Advanced materials are defined as materials intentionally designed with superior performance or special functions.[1]
The deadline for nominations is 20th February 2025.#
What will the Working Group do?#
SAPEA will draft an Evidence Review Report on Advanced Materials, covering all relevant fields relating to the scope. This Report will then inform a Scientific Opinion of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors. The main scoping questions to be addressed are:
1. What impetus can advanced materials bring to EU strategic autonomy?
This should cover:
a. Research areas in advanced materials reflecting EU core strengths, and with highest potential impact on industrial competitiveness (low hanging fruits), and gaps where the EU should put additional efforts, and
b. Crosscutting research challenges on safe and sustainable advanced materials for the circular economy (design, development, characterisation, processing, production and product integration).
The Group should showcase best practices, pitfalls and roadblocks to avoid.
2. How can the cross-fertilisation of advanced materials innovation be enhanced?
This should cover:
a. Tapping the potential of new innovative functionalities across sectors and applications, and stimulating new business models and innovation markets, and
b. Facilitating alignment and feedback loops between advanced materials basic research and industrial needs and supporting uptake by industry.
The Group should showcase best practices, pitfalls and roadblocks to avoid.
Who can be nominated?#
You can nominate experts who may or may not be Members of Academia Europaea (MAE). An indicative list of expertise sought is given in the Call for Nominations document.
How to make a nomination#
For further details, please read the Call for Nominations document, which includes important information about areas of expertise, criteria for selection, and expected workload and timelines.
Nominations should be accompanied by a detailed curriculum vitae, together with a short statement on how the nominee’s experience meets the areas of expertise identified in the Call for Nominations document.
Please send nominations or any queries you may have to AECardiffHub@cardiff.ac.uk before the deadline of 20th February 2025.
