Statement supporting the proposed Directive on the use of Animals in EU research#

The AE are pleased to add our name to that of many leading European research institutions and national and international funders of biomedical research in supporting the essential use of animal models I biomedical and pharmaceutical research. The proposed new Directive published by the Commission continues to ensure that there is a carefully regulated balanced approach in the use of animal models. The proposal strengthens the regulatory regime and ensures a continuing search for alternatives, but recognises that the use of Animals in medical research remains a fundamentally critical component.
