2021 Descartes-Huygens Prize to Prof. Charles-Édouard Levillain #

Professor of modern British history at the research laboratory on anglophone cultures of the University of Paris-CNRS and member of Academia Europaea’s History & Archaeology Section (2021), Charles-Édouard Levillain has been distinguished by the 2021 Descartes-Huygens Prize, jointly awarded, on the one hand, by the French ministries of Foreign and European Affairs and of Higher Teaching and Research and, on the other, by the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences.

His main area of expertise is centered on Anglo-Franco-Dutch political and diplomatic relations, particularly at the end of the Dutch « Golden Age ». He will be writing a biography of the King-Stadholder William III of Orange (1650 -1702) and, over the next few years, will carry out extensive historical research in the Netherlands together with colleagues from the University of Utrecht with whom Charles-Édouard Levillain has been collaborating since 2002. Worth mentioning is their launching, on that same year, of the Williamite Universe, an international network established with the purpose of bringing together scholars interested in and working on international politics and culture between 1650 and 1750.
