Fabio Biscarini - Biography#

Fabio Biscarini is Full Professor of Chemistry at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and Principal Investigator in the Center for Translational Neurophysiology-Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Ferrara, where he heads the research line “Organic Neuroelectronics” since 2019.

Biscarini received Laurea in Industrial Chemistry cum Laude at Università di Bologna with Claudio Zannoni, and Ph.D. in Chemistry at University of Oregon with Carlos Bustamante and V. M. Kenkre (UNM). He was postdoc at CNR Bologna with Carlo Taliani and Piergiorgio Merli (1994-1995), then CNR Researcher (1996-2001), Senior Scientist (2002-2010), Research Director (2010-2013). He was visiting professor at IIT from 2017 to 2019.

His current research interest is organic bioelectronics: i) label-free biosensors for detecting biomarkers for human health; ii) implantable neuroelectronics for bidirectional communication with the brain to study activity of the brain cortex. During his career, he explored modern aspects of physical chemistry and nanotechnology: theories of liquid crystals and STM; fundamentals of thin film growth; self-organized nanostructures; organic electronics; unconventional nanofabrication; advanced nanoscale characterization techniques in situ- and real time.

He authored more than 260 publications with >11500 citations and h-index 62 (Source: Google Scholar, March 2021). He coordinated several EU (10) and National (4) projects, and was principal investigator in 30 EU, National, and Regional projects. He served in the Editorial Board of Chemical Society Reviews (Royal Society of Chemistry, UK) from 2004 to 2008.

He is co-inventor of 20 patents. He founded three start-up companies: Scriba Nanotecnologie srl (2005 - 2020), Nano4bio Srl (2008-2015), Organic Bioelectronics Srl (2019-to date). He was awarded 2012 Premio Sapio Industria and 2007 EU-Descartes Prize. He is Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry since 2004, and Member of Accademia delle Scienze di Modena since 2017.
