Fabrizio Della Seta (1951) earned a Laurea in Lettere at the University “La Sapienza” of Rome in 1975 under the guidance of Nino Pirrotta, and studied musical composition with Paolo Renosto and Fausto Razzi getting a conservatory diploma in 1977. He was teacher of Music History in the State Conservatories of music (1976-88), Associate Professor of Music at the University of Siena (1988-2000), and since 2000 Full Professor in the Dipartimento di Musicologia e Beni culturali of the Università di Pavia, in Cremona, where he chairs the PhD programme in Musicology and teaches Music history, Problems of the historiography of music, and Musical philology. He was visiting professor in the Music Department of the University of Chicago in the spring term 2009. He was the President of the National Committee for the celebration of Bellini centenary in 2001, and a member of the National Committee for the celebration of Verdi centenary in 2001. He planned and organized two international conferences: “Vincenzo Bellini: verso l’edizione critica” (Siena 2000) and “Vincenzo Bellini nel secondo centenario della nascita” (Catania 2001). He was a member of the scientific board of the international conference “Verdi 2001” (Parma–New York–New Haven, January 25-31, 2001), and the chair of the Programme Committee of the 19th Congress of the International Musicological Society (Rome, July 1-7, 2012). He was a co-editor of the Rivista italiana di musicologia (1986-1991), and, since its setting up, of Il Saggiatore Musicale. He collaborated in the research activities of the Istituto Nazionale di Studi Verdiani in Parma (1995-2010), for which was co-editor of the yearbook Studi verdiani. At present he is a co-editor of the Edizione critica delle opere di Vincenzo Bellini (Milan: Ricordi), and a member of the Editorial Board of The Works of /Le opere di Giuseppe Verdi (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, Milan: Ricordi). In the year 2005 he received the international award "Luigi ed Eleonora Ronga" for the Musicology, History of Music, and Musical Criticism of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, and was elected as member af the Academia Europaea. Since 2012 he is a corresponding member of the Istituto Lombardo Accademia di Scienze e Lettere, since 2015 member of the Arcadia – Accademia Letteraria Italiana. His research fields included, at various times: 1) music, science, and philosophy in late Middle Ages; 2) Italian musical life in late 17th and early 18th century; 3) music in 19th century Italy and France; 4) theory and analysis of musical theatre; 5) music textual criticism, with emphasis on Italian romantic opera; 6) the creative process in music, with emphasis on Bellini, Verdi, and Beethoven. He has published three books, four critical editions (Verdi, Rossini, Bellini), many essays on Italian and international reviews, proceedings and miscellanies, entries for Italian (Dizionario Enciclopedico Universale della Musica e dei Musicisti, Turin: UTET) and international (Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, Zweite, neubearbeitete Auflage, Kassel: Bärenreiter) encyclopaedias; he also co-edited five miscellanies and conference proceedings. His critical edition of I Puritani (Milan: Ricordi 2013) received the “C.V. Palisca Award” 2014 of the American Musicological Society for the best musical edition.
