Carles Escera - Biography#


Carles Escera is full professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the Department of Psychiatry and Clinical Psychobiology, Faculty of Psychology, and Director of the Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behavior (IR3C) of the University of Barcelona. He is also the principal investigator of the Excellence Research Group in Cognitive Neuroscience (Brainlab; http://www.ub.edu/brainlab) of the Catalan Government. He joined the University of Barcelona as assistant professor in 1988, where he obtained his PhD in 1993. He has worked as postdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki (Finland) during several periods in 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1999, and held the position of visiting professor of the University of Bremen (Germany) and fellow of the Hanse Wissenschaftkolleg (Delmenhort, Germany) in 2004-2005.

He has been involved in the organization of more that fifteen international congresses and conferences in the fields of Psychophysiology and Cognitive Neuroscience, and has given lectures in universities located worldwide (USA, Japan, Singapore, UK, Germany, etc.). Prof. Escera has been the principal investigator of more than 26 research projects including several of the Framework Programme of the European Union (FP4, FP5 and FP7).

Recently, he coordinated the ERANET-NEURON project of EU entitled “PANS-Probing the Auditory Novelty System”. Carles Escera has co-authored more than 100 publications in international journals, including Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Cerebral Cortex, Brain or Journal of Neuroscience (total citations circa 3500, index h=31). He recently was awarded with the ICREA Academia Distinguished Professorship in the year 2010.
