Education- 1967-70 University of Western Australia (with Commonwealth University Scholarship for 1967-70);
- B.A. (Honours, First Class) in 1970 and Amy Jane Best Prize in English Literature, 1968; awarded Hackett Overseas Studentship for 1971-74
- 1971-74 University of Cambridge (Clare Hall), research for Ph.D under the supervision of Walter Ullmann
- 1974-75 University of Munich, Seminar für lateinische Philologie des Mittelalters (under Bernhard Bischoff) - Grad 1.

Other activities
- In 2001-2, served on a 5-man International evaluation team to assess the work in medieval studies of the Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften (Austrian Academy of Sciences)
- In 2002-3 and again 2004-5, member of the Stammkommission of the Max Planck Institut für Geschichte in Göttingen, (the only member from Britain), in order to determine the future focus of the Institute and appoint the new Directors
- In September 2003, Chairman of the international evaluating team to assess the work of the national research school (Onderzoekschool Medievistik) for Medieval Studies in the Netherlands
- In August, 2005, one of six external evaluators of the University of Helsinki's History and Social Science History Departments and the Renvall Institute of Cultural Studies (the other members of the team were from Sweden, Finland, Japan, Germany and Ireland)
- 2008- member, Panel of assessors for the Royal Dutch Academy Research Professorships (awarded in all academic disciplines)
- 2009 member of jury for the Institut Universitaire de France, (Senior) research professorships (asked again for 2010 but unable to act because of a clash of schedule)
- 2009-10 External Elector, Chair in Geschichte (Hilfswissenschaft) University of Vienna
- 2010 March –JuJuly Member of 3-man evaluation committee, German Union of Academies of Sciences for their long term project Germania Sacra
35 PhDs supervised plus additional research supervision of other postgraduate degrees.
