Sonja Meier - Biography#
Sonja Meier was born in 1964. She studied Law at the University of Regensburg (Germany, First State Exam 1990) and at University College London (LL.M., 1991). After further years of legal training, she passed the Second State Exam in 1994. In 1997 she received her doctoral degree for a dissertation on the English law of unjust enrichment. In 1997/98, she was working as an assistant lecturer at the University of Cambridge (UK). After two years as an assistant professor at the University of Regensburg, she moved to the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law where she worked as a Senior Researcher. After writing her habilitation thesis on plurality of debtors in historical and comparative perspective, she received her professorial lecturing qualifications in Private law, Roman law, European Legal History and Comparative law in 2009. In the same year, she became Professor of Private law and European legal history at the University of Marburg. Since 2012, she has been Professor of Private and Comparative Law and Director of the Institute of Comparative and International Private Law, Dep. 1, at the University of Freiburg.
