Chunli Bai - Biography#
Prof. Chunli BAI, a chemist and leading scientist in nanoscience, is the President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He is also the President of the Presidium of the Academic Divisions of CAS, and the President of the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries (TWAS).
His research area initially involved the structure and property of catalysts, X-ray crystallography of organic compounds, molecular mechanics and EXAFS research on electro-conducting polymers. Since the mid-1980s, he has shifted his research interests to the fields of scanning probe microscopy (SPM), single molecule, molecular nanostructure and self-assembly, molecular nanodevices, and novel nanomaterials.
Dr. Bai has published more than 350 scientific publications in refereed journals and authored 12 monographs and several book chapters in the field. He has won more than twenty prestigious awards and prizes for his academic achievements. He has been elected member or foreign member of more than 15 world-known academies of science or engineering, such as CAS, TWAS, US NAS, AAAS,RS, RAS, German National Academy of Science and Engineering (actach.de), the Australian Academy of Science (AAS), Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, and so forth. He was awarded Honorary Doctorate or Professorship in more than 15 universities. He is a recipient of the UNESCO first medal “for contributions to the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology” (shared with Nobel Laureate Professor Zhores Ivanovich Alferov), International Medal awarded by the Society of Chemical Industry (London-based) and the TWAS 2002 Medal Lecture in Chemical Sciences.
Because of his meritorious service, he has been president of TWAS since 2013. He was elected as the Chairman of Governing Board of the Global Research Council (GRC) in May 2014. He is or has served as President of the Federation of Asian Chemical Societies (FACS), President of the Chinese Chemical Society(CCS), Honorary President of the Chinese Society of Micro-Nano Technology (CSMNT), Vice President of the China Association for Science and Technology, Vice President of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Materials. He has served on the International Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of American Chemical Society,Angewandte Chemie, Advanced Materials and Chemical Physics Letters.
