Born 13 December 1945 in Basel (Switzerland).

Undergraduate studies at the University of Basel, then study of Classics and Medieval Latin at the Free University of Berlin; Degrees of MA (1972) and Dr.phil (1974), and position as ‘Wissenschaftliche Assistentin’. British Council Postdoctoral Scholar (St. Hugh’s College Oxford), D.Phil. (Oxon.) 1981.

From 1978-1987 Senior Lecturer at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland), since 1987 Professor of Classics. Visiting professorships at the Universities of Neuchâtel, Lausanne, Taru (Estonia). Senior Associate Member of the American School of Classical Studies Athens (2000); Summer Fellowship in Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks, Washington D.C. (2001); Member 2005/06 Institute for Advanced Study Princeton.

Various committee activities:
  • Swiss Institute Rome (Council of the Swiss Universities 1988-2009)
  • Swiss National Research Council (1989-2000)
  • President (since 2010) of Société Internationale de Bibliographie Classique (2005-2009 Vice-President).
