Gianmario Borio - Biography#

Gianmario Borio graduated in Philosophy at the Università di Torino and gained his PhD in Musicology at the Technische Universität Berlin. He held research fellowships from DAAD, the Paul Sacher Foundation and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. 1993-1999 he was Associate Professor of Musicology at the Università di Pavia, since 2000 he has been Full Professor at the same university.

In 1999, Borio was awarded the Dent Medal by the Royal Musical Association. He has been visiting professor at various institutions in Europe, Canada and the USA. In 2013, he was Distinguished Visiting Professor Compagnia di San Paolo at The Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America (Columbia University, New York).

He has been a member of the editorial board of the journals "Il Saggiatore Musicale" (1994-2010) and "Acta Musicologica" (2000-2010); since 2005 he is a member of the editorial board of "Filigrane" and since 2008 of the "Swiss Yearbook for Musicology". He is a member of the advisory boards of "Journal of the Royal Musical Association", "Music Analysis", "Twentieth Century Music" and "Il Saggiatore Musicale". From 1994 to 2010 he was a member of the scientific board of Archivio Luigi Nono (Venice) and since 2010 of the Centro Studi Luciano Berio (Florence). Since 2006 he has been a member of the artistic committee of the Milano Musica Festival.

He has been named to evaluate research grant applications from Austria, Belgium, Canada, Italy, Germany and Switzerland.

Principal research projects:

• From 1993-96, together with Hermann Danuser, he directed a research project financed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft on the history of the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt; this research resulted in a work of 4 volumes which has become a point of reference for research in this field.
  
• From 1993 to today, has organized international conferences, financed by public and private organizations including the University of Pavia, University Marc Bloch of Strasbourg, the Walter Stauffer Foundation of Cremona, the Ugo and Olga Levi Foundation of Venice, the Cini Foundation of Venice, the Laboratory of Mediterranean Research of Marsala.
  
• 2002-2007, has directed the project Storia dei concetti musicali (History of Musical Concepts), financed by the Italian Ministry of the University and Research.
  
• In 2006 he founded, together with Hermann Danuser (Humboldt University Berlin) and John Rink (Royal Holloway, University of London), the European Network for Musicological Research, the first structure in Europe dedicated to advanced studies in musicology; the project has received a three year grant from the Ernst von Siemens Foundation, Munich, Germany.
  
• In 2007 he initiated with Elena Mosconi the research group Worlds of Audiovision (based in the Università di Pavia, Dipartimento di Musicologia e Beni Culturali, Cremona (http://www.worldsofaudiovision.org)
