Academic career
- 1962-8: Girton College, Cambridge as an undergraduate and graduate
- 1968-71, Girton College, Cambridge as a Research Fellow and then Fellow and Director of Graduate Studies in History.
- 1971-1990: Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader-Elect at the University of Manchester (History Dept)
- 1990-present: Beit Professor of Commonwealth History at Oxford and Professorial Fellow of Balliol College.
- 1987-93: Member of British National Committee of International Historical Congress
- 1991-6: member of governing council of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London (Vice-Chair 1994-6)
