Academic career
  • 1962-8: Girton College, Cambridge as an undergraduate and graduate
  • 1968-71, Girton College, Cambridge as a Research Fellow and then Fellow and Director of Graduate Studies in History.
  • 1971-1990: Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader-Elect at the University of Manchester (History Dept)
  • 1990-present: Beit Professor of Commonwealth History at Oxford and Professorial Fellow of Balliol College.
  • 1987-93: Member of British National Committee of International Historical Congress
  • 1991-6: member of governing council of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London (Vice-Chair 1994-6)
  • 1996-2008: Trustee of the Charles Wallace India Trust (Chair, 2001-2. 2005-6)
  • 1996: On HEFCE Research Assessment Panel for History
  • 1997-2011: Governor of Bath Spa University
