José Cerón - Biography#

  • 1991 DVM: Veterinary School, University of Murcia, Spain. With the following awards:
    • University of Murcia Award for the Best Academic Results in Murcia Veterinary School.
    • Spanish Government Award for the Best Academic Results in Veterinary Studies in Spain.
    • Ralston Purina Award for Excellence in Veterinary Studies.

  • 1995 PhD: Veterinary School University of Murcia, Spain. With the following award:
    • University of Murcia Extraordinary Award for the Best PhD Thesis of the year in Murcia Veterinary School.

Dr. Cerón is now a full Professor at Murcia University Veterinary School and Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology. He serves as Head of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory of Murcia University (with more than 20 years in this position) giving routine service to the teaching hospital, external practitioners and private companies related with companion and large animals. His Laboratory is accredited by the Standard Committee of the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology and it is considered as a laboratory of reference in biomarkers of animal health and welfare in Spain.

He is also the leader of a research group consisting comprising 10 senior staff, which has been accredited as a research group of excellence by the Autonomic Government of Murcia Region. He has recently received an award by Murcia University for the best research for transfer to the private sector. He is Head of the section dedicated to biomarkers of the "Fundation Garcia Cugat" which is a charity dedicated for the transfer of knowledge between human and veterinary doctors (http://www.fundaciongarciacugat.org)

Following his role as chief of the Education Committee of the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology from 2003-7, he was selected as President from 2007-11. During this period as President the had a major impact in growing both the membership and the scientific quality of the meetings and related activities to promote the discipline in Europe.

He has been Associated Editor of the Veterinary Clinical Pathology journal during 8 years and now is the Section Editor of the BMC Veterinary Research journal, which according to its ISI ranking in the Veterinary field, is one of the top journals.

He has been external evaluator for the European Accreditation of Veterinary Schools. In addition he has acted as a reviewer of research projects in the area of veterinary sciences funded by European Union and other funding bodies of European and American countries such as Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Croatia and Slovenia. Currently he is an external examiner of Glasgow University.

Under the Eramus framework, Prof Ceron coordinated the largest project funded up till now by the European Union related to education in veterinary laboratory diagnosis, in which partners participated from the UK, France, Belgium, Italy, Finland, Germany and Hungary. This project produced educational material that it is currently used worldwide.

Prof Ceron has published more than 180 peer-reviewed papers in international journals on laboratory analysis with particular relevance to disease in animals. He has been an invited speaker at numerous important veterinary meetings such as the meetings of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Northern Veterinary Conference of USA, International Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology and the Japanese Society of Laboratory Diagnosis. Some of his scientific papers have been received awards such as the award of The Veterinary Journal for the best paper published in 2004, the award for the best presentation of European Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology in 2008 and for the best scientific communication of the European Society of Veterinary Clinical Nutrition in 2012 and of the Southern Veterinary Conference in 2016.
