Zsolt Demetrovics - Biography#
Zsolt Demetrovics is a professor of psychology at the ELTE Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, Hungary, and chair of the Centre of Excellence in Responsible Gaming at the University of Gibraltar. He obtained his MA degrees in psychology and cultural anthropology (ELTE Eötvös Loránd University) and received his PhD in personality and health psychology (addictive behaviours) at the same university. He is also a certified clinical psychologist (University of Pécs, Pécs, Hungary).
He served as Dean of the Faculty of Education and Psychology (2014-2021) and director of the Institute of Psychology (2011-2021) at the ELTE Eötvös Loránd University, where he founded the Department of Clinical Psychology and Addiction. Among other initiatives, he has also established the Clinical Psychology and Addiction PhD Program, which he has been leading since 2015.
He has published over 400 research papers and book chapters. He has also authored and edited over 30 books on the epidemiology, assessment and psychological correlates of substance use behaviour and behavioural addictions. More recently, he has dedicated his focus to the understanding of mechanisms behind technological addictions including problematic internet use, problematic social media use and gaming disorder. His publications have received over 20,000 citations (Google Scholar) and his Hirsch-index is 75 (68 since 2017) according to Google Scholar and 56 in Scopus.
He is a former president of the Hungarian Association on Addictions, founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Behavioural Addictions, and president of the International Society for the Study of Behavioural Addictions. He is a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He is a board member of the International Collaboration on ADHD and Substance Abuse (ICASA) and serves as a member of the editorial board of several Hungarian and international journals (e.g., European Addiction Research, Addictive Behaviors, Hungarian Journal of Psychology).
