Giuseppe Di Giovanni - Biography#
Giuseppe Di Giovanni is currently a Professor of Human Physiology and Neuroscience at the University of Malta and an Honorary Professor of Neuroscience in the School of Biosciences at Cardiff University.
He is an internationally recognised leader in the field of serotonin, in health and disease states, and as such was invited to participate to the updated International Union of Pharmacological Review on 5-HT receptor classification published in Pharm Review (2021).
In particular, his research has continued to focus on understanding the pathophysiology of central serotoninergic system in different neuropsychiatric disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, drugs of addiction, depression and epilepsy. His work, focusing on the study of serotonin receptors, has made an important contribution towards understanding the mechanism of psychoactive molecules including antipsychotics, antidepressants, and drugs of abuse.
His work continue to use state-of-the-art techniques including in vitro and in vivo electrophysiology with optogenetics and has attracted national (Italy and Malta) and international funding (EU and UK).
His collaborative work with colleagues in Cardiff on the brain activity that results in absence seizures published in Nature in 2009 and Nature Neuroscience 2018 has provided for a paradigm shift view of our understanding of childhood absence epilepsy.
Giuseppe Di Giovanni continue to play an essential role in neuroscience publishing. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Neuroscience Methods (Elsevier) and the Editor of “The Receptors” book series (Springer). He is very passionate about this aspect of scietific research dissemination and continues to deliver lectures to the academics in Malta, Italy, UK and the rest of the world on how to be an effective ??? scitific writer and?? ??? ?
He is an experienced and passionate lecturer: he has taught, designed, reviewed and developed undergraduate and postgraduate neuroscience, physiology and pharmacology courses in UK, Malta and Italy.
