Friedrich Geiger - Biography#
Friedrich Geiger studied historical and systematic musicology and Latin Philology in Munich and Hamburg, where he earned his doctorate in 1997. Then he led the Forschungs- und Informationszentrum für verfemte Musik (Research and information center for outlawed Music), a joint project of the Dresden Center for Contemporary Music and the Technical University of Dresden. In 2003 he received his Habilitation at the University of Hamburg and moved to the Department of Musicology of the Freie Universität Berlin as a research associate of Albrecht Riethmüller in the DFG Sonderforschungsbereich (Collaborative Research Center) " "Ästhetische Erfahrung" (Aesthetic Experience). In 2007 he was appointed professor of historical musicology at the University of Hamburg and recently in 2020 he became professor of musicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. His research interests concern various fields of the history of music of the 19th century to the present. Main focusses are the role of music in dictatorships, popular music and the geographical dimension of music history.
