Sigmund Grønmo#
Professor Grønmo was born in 1947. He received a Degree of Magister in Political Science from the University of Oslo in 1971. From 1972 to 1974 he was Research Assistant at the Institute of Social Research and from 1978 to 1988 he was research director at the Norwegian Fund for Market and Distribution Research. He was Adjunct Professor of Sociology at the University of Oslo from 1978 to 1988, Professor at the Norwegian School of Management in 1989 and since 1990 he is Professor of Sociology at the University of Bergen.
He was Visiting Professor in Canada (Dalhousie University), in USA (Illinois State University and University of California, Berkeley), and in Australia (University of Queensland).
He was Department Chair, Vice Dean, Dean, and Pro-Rector (Pro Vice Chancellor) at the University of Bergen. Since August 2005 he is the Rector (Vice Chancellor) of the University.
Sigmund Grønmo served as co-editor of Sosiologisk Årbok and has been a member of the editorial boards of three journals (Consumption, Culture & Markets, Sosiologisk tidsskrift and Tidsskrift for samfunnsforskning).
Sigmund Grønmo was chair of the University Research Committee, the Council for Information, the Council for the First Semester Studies, and the Committee for Academic Profile and Quality at the University of Bergen.
He was also chair of the Research Committee of the Norwegian University Council, and the chair of the board of NIFU-STEP - Studies in Innovation, Research and Education. He was vice chair of the board for the Culture and Society Division of the Research Council of Norway and member of the board of The Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT). He was member of the Nordic Science Policy Council, and member of the Research Working Group of the European University Association.
He was preses (president) of the Society for the Advancement of Science.
Currently he is a member of the Regional Business and Industry Forum in the County of Hordaland, and a member of the Council of the Bergen International Festival. He is the chair of the board of the Higher Education Network of Western Norway and a member of the board of the Norwegian Association of Higher Education Institutions (UHR).
Sigmund Grønmo was chair of the board of the Southern African - Nordic Centre (SANORD) and is now a member of the Steering Group of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN).
He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and of Academia Europea.
His main research interests are within economic sociology, with particular emphasis on network studies and structural analysis. He has written several books and articles in Norwegian and international journals, especially in the areas of economic sociology, sociology of time, and methodology.
