Seán Hand has made an international impact in French literary and critical
studies, through publication of outstanding and highly interdisciplinary
monographs, articles, critical editions and translations relating to key
twentieth-century French intellectuals. Hand has also been an important
promoter of European values and ideas within British higher education..
Having brought Levinas’s work to a global audience through the English-language
publication of a critical Reader (republished 18 times to date).
Professor Hand has also been an important promoter of European values and
ideas within British higher education. He has been Head of a university
Department of French Studies, Dean of an academic School of Languages,
and Associate Dean of an Arts and Humanities Faculty. He has sat on the
British executive committees of the Society for French Studies, the University
Council for Modern Languages, the Association of University Professors
and Heads of French, and the Standing Council of Heads of Modern Languages,
as well as being on the Advisory Council of the University of London Institute
of Romance Studies. He has been an Assessor for the Irish Research Council,
and director of national projects funded by the Arts and Humanities Research
Council (AHRC) and the Higher Education Founding Council for England; and
he is a member of the AHRC Peer Review College and its Strategic Reviewers
Group. He was decorated by the French Government in 2004 for his services
to French education, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and
the Chartered Institute of Linguists.
