Pancras C.W. Hogendoorn - Biography#
Pancras Hogendoorn is Professor of Pathology at Leiden University (The Netherlands), being an internationally recognized expert in the molecular pathogenesis of bone and soft tissue tumours. He obtained his MD degree and his PhD from Leiden University. He specialised in oncologic pathology at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (Amsterdam) and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York). His research as clinician/scientist has led to seminal discoveries on the molecular pathogenesis and genetics of bone sarcomas, with major contributions to understanding the tumour mechanisms, identification of diagnostic tools and therapy targets. As recognition of his research and diagnostic work the World Health Organisation invited him to join the working group for the classification of these tumours.
He has organised and given numerous international pathology courses on 5 continents, being distinguished with several teaching prices and awards. He served in the editorial boards of Journal of Pathology, Diagnostic Histopathology and Hereditary Cancer in Clinical Practice.
In parallel, Hogendoorn is highly respected for his work on national and international advisory and organisational boards (see sections 1.11 and 4.2). This relates to his expertise as clinician/scientist (various societies and working groups on pathology), his vision on research and education (contributed to establishing the Dutch National Research Agenda (NWA); chairman of Education and Training at the Netherlands Federation of University Medical Centres), unifying the research, education and entrepreneurial efforts at regional (vice-chairman of the executive committee of “Medical Delta”) and European level (scientific-coordinator of the “Health-Ties” consortium).
In 2012 he made a career shift from clinician/researcher to dean/researcher, and he continues to successfully combine his administrative duties with high-quality research, as illustrated by recent scientific output.
