SCIENTIFIC PROFILE:

Eystein Jansen is professor of paleoclimatology/marine geology at the University of Bergen, Research director of the Bjerknes Center for Climate Research, and a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences, The Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences (NTVA) and the Norwegian Academy of Polar Sciences. Jansen has 27 years of post doctoral research experience in various aspects of marine climates, geochemistry and oceanography. He is active in a number of international programs and working groups under the auspices of IPCC, IGBP, SCOR and WCRP, and convenor of a large number of international scientific symposia and workshops. Jansen is director of the Bjerknes Centre, the national centre of excellence in climate research in Norway. He is the author or co-author of more than 110 peer review scientific papers, and is specially known for research on reconstructing the past behaviour of the thermohaline ocean circulation and rapid climate change. In 2000 he led the development of a new 10 year research program on climate research for the Norwegian Research Council.

• Jansen was co-ordinating lead author for the Paleoclimate chapter in the IPCC´s 4th Assessment Report.
