Current research
My research focuses on sustainable use of the marine environment in relation to fisheries and aquaculture. My research group currently provides science and advice to the Isle of Man Government and I have a team of two scientists based permanently within the Government for this purpose. We achieve our research through extensive collaboration with the fishing industry by engaging fishermen in data collection. We are currently moving towards a position where we could implement ecosystem based management of scallop fisheries in the Isle of Man and also in Wales. Our research has underpinned the Marine Stewardship Council accreditation of the queen scallop fishery in the Isle of Man and of the blue mussel fishery in Wales. At an international level my research is recognised as world leading in the area of understanding how fishing interacts with seabed systems. This research is used as evidence in 27 MSC assessments of trawl/dredge fisheries that are currently certified by the MSC.
Research students
I have supervised to completion 22 PhD students to date with a 100% success rate with all passes with minor or no corrections. I currently have four PhD students at different stages of completion.
International recognition
I have sat on international research advisory committees in The Netherlands, Finland, and Norway, and have reviewed research programmes in the UK for organisations such as UK Government DEFRA and Marine Scotland Science. I have reviewed University programmes for the University of Wageningen for which I am Chair of the Assessment Panel for the MSc in Fisheries and Aquaculture. I was the co-convener and scientific lead for the 6th World Fisheries Congress in Edinburgh 2012.
