Michał Karoński - Biography#

Michał Karoński is a professor and head of the Department of Discrete Mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. He does research in discrete mathematics (random discrete structures, graph theory) and theoretical computer science (graph algorithms). In the mid-1970s, Professor Karoński established a research group working on the theory of random structures, which quickly achieved international renown, becoming one of the leading teams in the world on this subject. He has authored 60 publications and delivered over 30 plenary lectures and guest speaker talks at international conferences. During his academic career he has held several positions including a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Florida and visiting professorships at Southern Methodist University, Purdue University and the Johns Hopkins University. He has also conducted research in many academic centers abroad, including universities in Moscow, Lund, Bielefeld, Pittsburgh (CMU) and Singapore, as well as at research centers in the USA (Bellcore, Microsoft Research), Denmark (BRICS), South Korea (Com2Math), England (Isaac Newton Institute) and Sweden (Mittag-Leffler Institute). Since 1992, he has been a visiting professor at Emory University in Atlanta. He, together with Noga Alon and Andrzej Ruciński is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Random Structures & Algorithms . The journal, was initiated in 1990 by Karoński in cooperation with Joel Spencer (NYU), and is published by John Wiley and Sons (USA ). Since 1983 he chaired both program and organizing committees of series of seventeen bi-annual conferences on random structures and algorithms held mainly in Poznań but also in Atlanta (twice), Tel Aviv and Pittsburgh. He also was a member of Committee for Scientific Research [2004-2005] and Research Council, an advisory body for the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Poland [2005-2010] and the Chairman of the Council of National Science Centre [2010-2016], a new Polish research funding agency.
