Her contribution has been in developing psychological interventions for common mental health problems, their evaluation in health services research and their widespread implementation once shown to be effective. Her seminal paper in 2000 showed how population demand resulted in an urgent requirement to deliver psychological interventions more efficiently and accessibly. She developed and evaluated low intensity psychological interventions; specifically cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) based Guided Self Help (GSH). She developed and evaluated CBT by telephone which has been implemented across IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies). She has developed GSH materials for depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and depression associated with coronary heart disease, diabetes, chronic widespread pain, chronic Oro-facial pain, ankyloses spondylitis, fatigue with Rheumatoid Arthritis and COPD and undertook RCTs that demonstrated their clinical and cost benefit.

She has also made a contribution to Global Health work in capacity building for early career researchers (ECR). She was funded by a 2016 Newton Funded workshop for 15 ECR from UK and 15 ECR from Indonesia to develop international collaborations in low to middle income countries. The workshop led to a number of funded grants led by both ECR UK and Indonesia researchers (MRC £126k), MRC/DFID/NIHR £350k, (DFID/MRC/NIHR/Wellcome £148K.She has also been awarded funding from the British Academy (GCRF) to run a writing workshop in Indonesia. She is a co-applicant of an NIHR (GCRF) on NIHR Global Health Research Group on Stillbirth Prevention and Management in Sub-Saharan Africa (led by Lavender) and has provided training to peer volunteers to deliver psychosocial care to women who have experienced stillbirth in Uganda and Kenya.
