Werner Muller - Biography#

Werner Muller (WM) did his PhD thesis in the laboratory of Klaus Rajewsky in 1987 at the Institute for Genetics, University of Cologne, Germany. WM's most important publication was on the generation and analysis of the Interleukin-10 deficient mouse mutant, published in Cell in the year 1993 (Cell 75(2), 263-274). Such mutants develop early onset inflammatory bowel disease. He also published, while in Cologne, senior authored peer reviewed articles in Science (1991) and Nature (1996). In 2000 WM started his own department named Experimental Immunology at the Helmholtz Centre of Infection Research in Braunschweig, Germany, where he worked on the generation and analysis of conditional Interleukin-10 and Interleukin-10 receptor deficient mouse mutants. In 2006 he accepted the Bill Ford Chair of Cellular Immunology at the University of Manchester. After moving to Manchester, he continues to work on chronic inflammatory bowel disease and the role of Interleukin-10 in the control of inflammation.

WM is involved in many scientific activities at the European Level. He was one of the founding members of the IMGT database, a database that is now the best known Immunogenetics database world wide. He participated in the EUMORPHIA program, introducing standardised mouse phenotyping into the mouse community EUMODIC program, a follow up of the EUMORPHIA program. He was also member of the network of Excellence for Immunologist in Europe, called MUGEN. He coordinated one out of four flagship EU projects in Systems Medicine, called SysmedIBD. The aim was to find better ways to stratify patients with inflammatory bowel disease and to gain predictive power for suggesting the best therapy for a patient with inflammatory bowel disease. SysmedIBD received 12.000.000 Euro funding for 5 years.
