Bernhard Nebel is one of the internationally most well known German AI researchers. He has pioneered the application of formal methods, in particular computational complexity analysis, to problems in knowledge representation and reasoning.

Bernhard Nebel has made an impact on applications of AI techniques in practice (e.g., autonomus soccer table).

He is also very active in community services (DFG, Dagstuhl, IJCAI, etc).
