Martin Ostoja-Starzewski - Biography#

Martin Ostoja-Starzewski did his undergraduate studies (1977) in Poland, followed (after work in industry in Austria and Canada) by Master’s (1980) and Ph.D. (1983) at McGill University, all in mechanical engineering. Before his current position at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he held faculty positions at Purdue University, Michigan State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and McGill University. His research is in theoretical and applied mechanics, primarily in stochastic mechanics, random and fractal media, condensed matter physics, as well as non-classical continuum models. He (co-)authored 240+ journal papers of which 21 were published by the Royal Society, London. His books are 1. Microstructural Randomness and Scaling in Mechanics of Materials, CRC Press (2008); 2. Thermoelasticity with Finite Wave Speeds, Oxford University Press (2010); 3. Tensor-Valued Random Fields for Continuum Physics, Cambridge University Press (2019); 4. Random Fields of Piezoelectricity and Piezomagnetism: Correlation Structures, Springer (2020). He is the Editor of Acta Mechanica, Mathematics and Mechanics of Complex Systems, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Thermal Stresses, and Section Editor of the Encyclopedia of Continuum Mechanics. Also, he is/was on editorial boards of many journals, e.g. Journal of Applied Mechanics, Probabilistic Engineering Mechanics, and Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering. He was a Timoshenko Distinguished Visitor at Stanford University (2012) and a Rothschild Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, University of Cambridge (2023). He was Site co-Director of the NSF Industry/University Research Center for Novel High Voltage/Temperature Materials and Structures (2014-2022). He was awarded the Worcester Reed Warner Medal (2018). He is a Fellow of ASME, AAM, and SES, an Associate Fellow of AIAA, and a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (2022).
