- Professor of Surgery in Southampton since 1993, developed an academic surgical service with emphasis on cancer particularly advanced colorectal cancer, liver cancer and pancreatic cancer. Major interest in minimal access surgery.
- Developed clinical trials and translational programme in cancer, supported by Cancer Research UK, National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the Medical Research Council (MRC). Globally practice changing outputs.
- Director of Wessex Clinical Research Network (CRN) (2007 - 2017): Administering annual budget of c£16M, increasing research activity by over 100% in 3 years, recruiting 43,000 patients in 2015/16
- Chair, National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Upper GI Clinical Studies Group (2012 - 2017) responsible for a portfolio of pivotal clinical trials in upper GI cancer involving up to 30% of incident cases in the UK, improving cancer care in the NHS. Delivered numerous cancer trials to completion, in many cases changing practice globally
